Mets had been in talks with the Cards since last year looking to obtain Abreu as a veteran presence as Andrew Vaughn continues to develop. The talks continued this year and the two clubs agreed to the deal. Pleasure doing business Connor (there’s a lot of them)

The trade market for Abreu was competitive, but felt this was the best return given the needs of the team (weak pitching farm). Jose Abreu has only one year left on his deal and is priced at a level that makes it nearly impossible to consider a contract extension. Given this fact, getting two exciting pitching prospects in return for him feels like a win for the Cards, while his production should hopefully provide a win for the Mets this year.
